SOME INDIAN FISH RECIPES FOR KIDS FOR THEM TO FALL IN LOVE WITH.

As kids we all have hated one particular food item or the other. Mothers used to look at magazines and newspapers to find out good recipes for kids and then run behind us with a plate saying “Kha ley, yeh acha hai”. Quite funnily, I hated fish more than anything. And I am a Bengali! From my childhood I have heard Bengalis love their fish like they love their shonas (read: gold) so me hating it was quite a shocker. But I was not only the kid who hated this particular item. I came across various mothers, especially working mothers, who complain about how their kids try to avoid it and how they have a difficult time trying to make a delicious Indian fish recipe for the kids. So, don’t worry supermoms, here are 5 Indian fish recipes for the kids at home so your kids can fall in love with fishes. So, let’s begin, shall we?

 

 

1. Fish Balls.

Ingredients:  250gms of Rohu (Rui) or Indian Carp(Katla) solid fish piece

1 cup of mustard oil

2 onion’s paste

2tspn ginger garlic paste

2tspn Kashmiri chilli powder

1tspn green chilli paste

A bowl of Chola Chatu

Salt and sugar as per taste

Process : Wash the pieces of the fish and then drain to remove excess water from them. Boil them in water in high flame so that the pieces get soft and then take them out and very carefully remove the bones from the pieces. Put the pieces in a bowl and proceed to smash them into a paste. Add all the ingredients to the fish paste and mix well. Then after mixing, make small balls and place them aside. Add the oil in a pan and in medium flame, heat it up. Then drop the balls in the pan and deep fry them. Slowly after doing it, turn off the flame and toss out the balls in an oil soaking paper to soak out excess oil.

Serve hot with mustard sauce or tomato sauce.

2. Fish Fingers.

Ingredients: 300gms of Barramundi (Bhetki) fish fillets cut in small thin pieces

½ cup of white vinegar

1 cup rice bran oil

2 onion’s paste

1tspn ginger garlic paste

Salt as per taste

1tspn red chilli powder

2 eggs

1 cup corn flour

Marination: Marinate the fish fillets for 2 hours in vinegar and salt at room temperature.

Process: Add all the masalas,salt and eggs in the corn flour and make a batter. Dip the marinated fish fillets in that batter. In a pan heat the oil and then in medium flame, one by one, dip the fish fillets in the oil and fry them. After doing it, turn off the flame and toss out the fish fingers in an oil soaking paper to soak out excess oil.

Serve hot with tomato sauce and some side salad.

3. Fish Fry.

Ingredients: 500gms of Basa or Barramundi (Bhetki) fish fillet cut into 4 equal size

Salt as per taste

1 ½ cup of white vinegar

2 onions

1 inch ginger

8 garlic cloves

2tspn cilantro and green chilli paste

1tspn garam masala powder

2 cups of rice bran oil

One small bowl of bread or biscuit crumbs

3 eggs

Marination: In a mixer make a paste of onion, ginger and garlic and from that paste, squeeze out all the juices from the pastes and keep it in a small bowl. Add the fish fillets in those juices,garam masala,vinegar and salt and marinate them for a whole night in fridge.

Process: In a bowl add the bread crumbs and take the marinated fish fillets and coat them in those crumbs on both sides. In another bowl batter the eggs and then dip the bread crumbed fish fillets into the egg batter and then again coat it in the bread crumbs. In a pan heat the oil and then in medium flame deep fry the fish fillets. After doing it, turn off the flame and toss out the fish fries in an oil soaking paper to soak out excess oil.

Serve hot with mustard sauce and some side salad.

4. Chilli Fish Dry.

Ingredients: 500gms of any solid piece of fish cut in cube pieces

3 onions diced

2 tomatoes diced

1 red and 1 green bellpepper diced

4-5 green chillis slit from the middle

1 cup white vinegar

¾th cup of soya sauce

¼th cup of tomato sauce

½ cup of chilli sauce

1 ½ cup soya bean oil

2 eggs

½ cup corn flour

Salt as per taste

Diced spring onions(for garnishing)

Marination: Marinate the fish cubes in salt and vinegar for 2-3 hours in room temp.

Process: Make a batter of eggs and corn flour with a little amount of salt. Coat the fish cubes in that batter. Then in a pan heat up the oil and in medium flame and fry the cubes until its cooked. Toss the fried pieces of fish in a small bowl and in that same oil sautee the diced onions, bellpeppers,tomatoed and chillis. Add soya sauce and fry them for a bit and then add the tomato sauce and chilli sauce into the pan. When bubbles start appearing, drop the already fried fish pieces into the pan and cook well. Add salt if needed. Stir the contents of the pan until the gravy thickens and it becomes dry. Add the spring onions for garnishing and stir once before removing the pan and serving it.

5.  Tandoori Pomfret.

Ingredients: 2 full pomfert fish

Salt as per taste

1tspn turmeric powder

1 lemon juice

1 ½ tspn ginger garlic paste

1tspn garam masala

½ tspn kasuri methi

1tspn red chilli powder

2tspn kashmiri red chilli powder

½ cup yoghurt

2-3 tspn rice bran oil

1st Marination: Wash the fishes thoroughly and then make tiny slits in them. In a plate put the fishes in them and add salt, turmeric powder, half of the lemon juice, half of ginger garlic paste, garam masala powder, red chilli powder and marinate the fishes and put them in the fridge for ½ hour.

2nd marination: After ½ hour, in a bowl add the yoghurt,rest of the lemon juice, rest of the ginger garlic paste, Kashmiri red chilli powder and kasuri methi and mix well. Coat the fishes in the mixture and then then keep them in the fridge for ½ hour for the second marination.

Process: Coat the oil in the microwave plater and then put the stand above it and put the fishes on the stand. Put tandoor mode in the microwave and grill the fishes for 10mins. After 10mins take out the fish and then flip them and then oil brush the other side and let it be grilled for another 10mins.

After the timer is over, serve the hot tandoori delicacy with onion rings and pudina chutney.
